ISU women’s soccer team finishes with dissappointing losses

The Iowa State women’s soccer team finished their season last weekend with two disappointing losses to Texas Tech and Baylor.

The weekend trip was the last chance for ISU to collect a conference win for the season, but the Cyclones fell to the Red Raiders 4-0 on Friday and the Bears 2-0 on Sunday.

In Friday’s game against Texas Tech the Cyclones were out-shot 16-5, but what hurt the ‘Clones even more was the 14 corner kicks that the Red Raiders took as opposed to the four ISU attempted. In fact, Texas Tech’s first goal came on a corner kick.

Texas Tech scored two goals in the first half and added two more in the second. Cyclone forward Barb Lavergne did not feel her team was in the game. “Texas Tech wasn’t our game,” Lavernge said. “We started the game like we would kill them, but after they scored their first goal, I don’t want to say we gave up, but I don’t know what happened.”

On Sunday, the Cyclones kept the score much closer. Despite being out-shot 22-4, the first half was scoreless. Baylor scored its first goal at the 67:06 mark and its second only a little more than a minute later.

Lavergne was much more pleased with the Baylor game, despite the loss. “I think we finally woke up on Sunday,” Lavergne said.

Iowa State forward Jocelyn Nordstrom attributes the problem the Cyclones face with being out- shot by opponents to the percentage of defense they play during a game.

“We play like 80 percent defense, and we’re not breaking out,” Nordstrom said.

Nordstrom was disappointed with the lack of a conference win on the season. The addition of 12 freshmen this season gave the team some high expectations that Nordstrom did not consider to be met.

“We had high expectations. It was kind of dissappointing,” Nordstrom said.

Nordstrom does have great expectations for next season. “I think maybe, to finish in the top three in conference, and actually go to the conference championship,” Nordstrom said.

Iowa State finished the season with a record of 8-12 overall and 0-9 in Big 12 play.
