Tom Manning’s return to Ames, Iowa, is official.

The Cyclones named Manning the team’s offensive coordinator and run game coordinator as part of a slew of staff changes on Friday. 

Manning’s hire, which had been reported earlier in the day, reunites head coach Matt Campbell with his former Mount Union teammate and his offensive coordinator from 2016-17. 

“We are thrilled to have Tom return as a valuable member of our staff,” Campbell said in a press release. “He is familiar with our program and played a big role in helping establish our culture here. He is an excellent coach and brilliant offensive mind, has been a highly successful play caller and he already has respect within our walls.

“He did a fantastic job with Indianapolis and we can’t wait to have him back as a Cyclone.”

As part of the staff changes, running backs coach Nate Scheelhaase will now handle wide receivers instead, and former wide receivers coach Bryan Gasser’s contract was not renewed. Gasser had been with Campbell since his arrival at Iowa State in 2016. 

Quarterbacks coach Joel Gordon was also promoted to passing game coordinator.

The Cyclones also announced the addition of former West Virginia defensive backs coach Matt Caponi to the team’s defensive staff. Caponi will coach the secondary, according to the release. 

To make way for Caponi’s arrival, special teams coach Joe Houston has been moved to an off-field position. 

Caponi was with West Virginia from 2016-18. 

“Matt is a rising star in this profession,” Campbell said of Caponi in the press release. “I’ve watched him grow as a player and coach, and he will be a great asset to our defense.”
