Coach Murdoch and the ISU hockey team introduced to GSB
September 14, 1995
If Government of the Student Body meetings get out of hand this year, Vice President Jennifer Sulentic may abandon her gavel for a hockey stick.
At Wednesday’s GSB meeting Al Murdoch, ISU’s head hockey coach, presented Sulentic with a hockey stick autographed by the 1995-96 team. The presentation preceded an introduction of more than 30 of the team’s 45 players.
Murdoch and his team made an appearance at the meeting to garner support for the upcoming season and to introduce the squad. Murdoch also made a brief appeal about the possibility of elevating the hockey team’s status.
“We have enough players for two teams,” Murdoch said. “We’re a club sport by definition, but we work like a varsity team. Yes, we want to go varsity. How we get there, I don’t know.”
The hockey team received $15,000 from GSB last spring, the most of any club. But those funds only cover a fraction of the team’s costs. For the most part, the hockey program is self-supporting.
Murdoch said hockey fans will have plenty to cheer about this season, such as the series with Illinois on Nov. 17 and 18.
“They hate us in Illinois,” Murdoch said. “When we go to play in Illinois, we’re packed in there like sardines.”
After the presentation, the players presented the rest of the Senate with game schedules, posters and ISU Hockey paper weights.
In other business, the following people were seated by unanimous consent:
Terri Houston, the new assistant dean of students and Doug Houghton were seated as the 1995-96 GSB Advisers.
Matthew McLaren replaced Sen. Jeremy Williams as the TRA senator. Williams was also seated as a member of the GSB Finance Committee as an at-large member. Other at-large members seated were Heidi Christensen, Todd Swansen and TyWanne Hill. The at-large alternatives seated were Jennifer Bass and John Hobson. The senators seated on the finance committee were Alan Beck, Paul Hardersen and Adam Obrecht.
The following people were seated as members of this year’s GSB Cabinet: Punneet Arora, director of academic affairs; Brad Feuerhelm and Kirk Kolhof, freshman council co-directors; Amber Powell, director of human relations; Sarah Moeller, director of lectures, arts and entertainment; Adam Gold, director of recreation and intramurals/events; Ben Bartles, director of student information; David Schooff, director of traffic and transportation.
Also, Erika Schmidt, executive secretary/treasurer; Sandra Frantzen, LAS senator; and Eric Bauer, Aaron Cooper and Troy Oetker, off-campus senators. Merrilee Fatland was seated at the Sept. 6 meeting as the disabilities senator.
