Iowa State beats UNLV 3-1 in NIVC semifinal match

Iowa State downed UNLV in a NIVC semifinal match on Saturday.

This season, UNLV entered the match with a record of 22-11 while Iowa State was sitting at 19-13.

Iowa State was led by Jess Schaben who had 24 kills, a .239 hitting percentage and 13 digs.

In a marathon of a first set, Iowa State was able to steal the set away from UNLV 31-29.

Iowa State finished the set with a .246 team hitting percentage and were led by Jess Schaben, who had eight kills and a .250 hitting percentage.

On the defense, Iowa State held UNLV to a .172 hitting percentage as the Cyclones had 4.5 team blocks. Middle blocker Candelaria Herrera had the most block assists with three while Josie Herbst and Piper Mauck both had two apiece. 

Taking a 2-0 lead in the match, Iowa State then captured the second set 25-19.

During the set, Schaben added seven more kills to push her total to 15 on the match. 

Iowa State had 4.5 blocks in the second set as UNLV had a hitting percentage of .077. Mauck and Herrera were tied in total block assists through the match with five each.

UNLV was then able to cut down the Iowa State lead to 2-1 by winning the third set 25-13.

UNLV had a .448 hitting percentage in the set compared to Iowa State’s .100.

Iowa State didn’t record any more blocks in the set and Schaben only added four more kills.

In the fourth set, Iowa State made a change at libbero replacing Izzy Enna with Hali Hillegas. Prior to the switch, Enna had a game high 19 digs.

Iowa State then took the set 26-24.

Iowa State had a .429 hitting percentage in the final set and held UNLV to .189 as the Cyclones added 2.5 blocks.

With the win, Iowa State is now set to face the winner of College of Charleston versus Tulane in the NIVC final.
