Iowa State starting running back Jirehl Brock headlines the most recent flock of Iowa State football players who were charged Thursday with tampering with records in relation to the gambling investigation.
Just a week after fellow teammates Hunter Dekkers, the projected starting quarterback, and Dodge Sauser were charged with tampering with records, Brock, defensive lineman Isaiah Lee, tight end DeShawn Hanika and offensive lineman Jacob Remsburg also picked up the same criminal charge.
All four players were projected to be starters in the upcoming football season.
Brock started the 2022 season as the starting running back and broke out at the start of the season. He stuttered after that due to multiple injuries during the back half of the year.
Brock was not practicing with the team at the start of fall camp. Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell would not disclose the reason that Brock was being held out.
Campbell also said that Remsburg and Lee were not practicing with the team, as reported by the Des Moines Register’s Randy Peterson after Wednesday’s press conference.
Brock operated an online gambling account not in his name, according to the criminal complaint. Brock allegedly placed four wagers on Iowa State football games while he was a part of the team.
Of those four football games in which Brock allegedly placed bets, he was active in two of them. The two games were against Iowa and Kansas State. He also placed 13 bets on Iowa State basketball games.
Lee was projected to be a starting defensive tackle for Iowa State. Lee was accused of placing 26 total bets with 12 being on Iowa State football games. Lee also allegedly placed a bet on Iowa State’s game against Texas in 2021 in which he played.
Remsburg was a starting offensive lineman through the majority of the 2022 season. Remsburg is accused of placing 273 bets with six being on NCAA sporting events. Those included basketball and football games. None of the alleged bets were on Iowa State sporting events.
Hanika was projected to be the starting tight end for the Cyclones in the upcoming season. Hanika is accused of placing 70 bets on Iowa State basketball games. None of Hanika’s bets were placed on Iowa State football games, according to the criminal complaint.
All four players could face permanent loss of eligibility under the NCAA gambling rules.
