The Iowa State University College Democrats announced on social media Thursday that they will maintain affiliation with the Iowa Democratic Party, changing their decision from an announcement in early November that they would disaffiliate.
According to the news release their decision came after “working internally and opening dialogues with several parties across the state” and does not state whether the party has made any changes since their original announcement to disaffiliate.
“The events that have led up to this situation have highlighted what we believe is an increased need for us to improve the communication we have with each other and realize that we all need to work together to achieve progress,” the statement read.
“The events” was the only mention of the situation causing the club to announce its disaffiliation.
According to previous reporting by the Daily, the club issued a statement formally disaffiliating with the Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) after party officials called for the resignation of three university Democrats at Iowa who signed a letter that in part stated, “We shamelessly and fully support Palestine.”
The November statement issued in response said the disaffiliation decision was “driven by several factors,” including questioning “the need for the IDP to exert control over our club.”
On Nov. 3, one day after the Daily and several other news organizations reported on the disaffiliation, the club issued another statement that said its executive cabinet was “undergoing a shift in leadership” and there would be no more public comments on the situation.
The statement Thursday said those seeking additional comment can do so by reaching out to their official club email instead of attempting to contact executive cabinet members directly. The Daily has contacted the club’s official email but has not received any immediate response.
