FBI joins search for missing Ames 5-year-old

The FBI has joined the search for 5-year-old Avery Doherty, who was reported missing to the Story County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 13, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has labeled the case as a familial abduction.

Ames Police believe Esther Bender, Avery’s non-custodial mother, has been with Avery since the start of their investigation.

Ames Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Amber Christian told KCCI Tuesday that the department is continuing to follow up on leads but that they “honestly have no idea” where Avery and Bender are.

“At this point, we would just like Esther to let us know that Avery is O.K., and by doing that, she needs to come forward and let us see Avery and have a conversation,” Christian said Tuesday.

The Daily was unable to immediately reach Christian for comment.

According to the missing person’s report, Avery is 45 pounds and 4 feet, 5 inches tall. Anyone with information can contact Ames Police at 515-239-5133.
