Iowa State students reacted to sights and activities of Cyclone Welcome Weekend and 801 Day. The university hosted its annual Cyclone Welcome Weekend, which began Friday and finished Sunday, while the unofficial 801 Day began at 8:01 a.m. on Saturday.
The Cyclone Welcome Weekend events included a cookout, breakfast with goats, a hypnotist and more. Elizabeth Backer, a first-year in environmental science, said she was most excited about the hypnotist.
“I’ve never seen anybody get hypnotized so maybe I’ll be one of them,” Backer said.
Reid Petersen, a first-year in computer science, said he was looking forward to getting to know people, exploring campus and attending the board game event.
“I think I’m gonna do the one with all the games,” Petersen said.
Cran said Cyclone Welcome Weekend is a come one, come all event, and they wanted to have programming the weekend leading into the startup of classes.
“We really wanted to have programming that Friday, Saturday and Sunday leading into the startup of classes and of course it overlaps with that event that’s not affiliated with Iowa State to make sure everyone has an opportunity to do something,” Cran said.
Madison Pooser, a senior in interior design, said she celebrated 801 Day and said her favorite part was seeing everyone back to school, including people she doesn’t live with and people that are going abroad.
“I love that everyone kind of like kept their places open and people would be able to move in and out. Everyone was kind of like open to everyone that day,” Pooser said.
Eleni Andrios, a senior in accounting, said her favorite part was just being with her friends.
“This was a good time meeting with all my friends and stuff like that,” Andrios said.
Pooser said she saw several police officers and saw “someone running from the cops and cops were speeding down.”
Over the course of the weekend, Iowa State University’s Police Department Statistics Summary recorded around 60% of people who were arrested or cited were not affiliated with Iowa State University.
