The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Story County and 42 other Iowa counties until 8 p.m. Monday, with heat index values expected up to 113 degrees, according to the warning.
“Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” the warning stated.
The city of Ames is anticipating “peak energy demand” Monday and has issued a “peak alert” for its consumers.
“By reducing electric demand between 3 to 7 p.m. today, customers will lower utility bills, contribute to a lower electric rate over time, and avoid the need to build additional generation,” Ames Public Information Officer Susan Gwiasda stated in a press release.
As part of the peak alert, Ames Electric Services is implementing its Prime Time Power program for its voluntary participants. When in effect, the program cycles off central air conditioning systems for 7.5 minutes each half hour.
The city is encouraging the following methods for reducing energy consumption during a peak alert:
- Turn off any unnecessary electrical devices
- Close curtains to block out the sun
- Wash dishes and clothes in the early morning or later evening
- Turn thermostats up 3 to 5 degrees and use fans
- Close air vents and doors in rooms not being used
- Avoid use of the oven during the afternoon and early evening
- Charge electric vehicles after 8 p.m.
