AMES — Iowa State took to the pitch Thursday night against Central Florida to compete for a share of first place in the Big 12.
Due to weather implications and lightning in the immediate area, Cyclones head coach Matt Fannon and Knights head coach Tiffany Sahaydak agreed to plead the game no contest.
Tough battle results in no-contest due to weather
Iowa State played a tough offensive matchup in the opening minutes of the contest, controlling possession for the majority of the first half. The introduction of Regan John, Sophia Thomas and Nicolasa Jacobs into the starting lineup proved beneficial for the Cyclones.
Goalkeeper Avery Gillahan made two crucial saves, one of which forced a deflection off of the crossbar. Gillahan’s efforts proved lucrative, but a later shot on goal by Jacobs took an unfortunate bounce that kept the match scoreless.
Both teams entered the second half in search of their first goal, yet neither team would strike first before the game was called due to a rain delay. Confusion swept the crowd, officials gathered and both teams entered their respective locker rooms.
It was not until an hour and a half into the delay at 9:28 p.m. that the game was suspended altogether with a result of no-contest. Regardless of the minutes played, both teams will retain a share of first place in the Big 12 standings.
Looking ahead following the no-contest
Although Iowa State could not get another potential win in the conference, the Cyclones still showed a lot of promise against a tough UCF team.
But the Cyclones do get an opportunity to potentially get that conference win in a quick turnaround, as Iowa State will be back in action Sunday against No. 21 Colorado at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Fannon and company will be seeking to win their first game against a ranked opponent this season.
The game will take place at noon Sunday and can be streamed on ESPN+.
