Both the Iowa State men’s and women’s golf teams were in action this week. The men took home the win in the Zach Johnson Invitational for the second straight year in West Des Moines, Iowa, while the women traveled to Norman, Oklahoma, for the Schooner Fall Classic and finished seventh.
Men’s Recap
The Iowa State men’s golf team made the short trip to West Des Moines, Iowa for the Zach Johnson Invitational. Play began with two rounds Monday and a final round Tuesday.
Iowa State captured a win at the Zach Johnson Invitational in 2023, thus entering the 2024 edition of the event looking to retain its title as champions of the Invitational.
The Cyclones were able to do just that, as Iowa State captured its second win Tuesday at the Zach Johnson Invitational behind some strong play in the late rounds.
Tied for first in round one
The Cyclone golfers entered hot Monday when the first round began. The team finished the round with a score of 287. This locked them into a tie for first place alongside Green Bay.
Iowa State senior Luke Gutschewski unsurprisingly found himself in a tie for fourth place after one round. His high placement among individuals pushed the team to the first-place tie.
Second-place finish at the end of round two
In the second round, the Cyclones improved upon their first-round performances with a score of 284. Despite this performance, the team slipped behind Loyola University of Chicago and finished in second place at the end of Monday.
The 571 cumulative score for Iowa State placed it a single stroke behind the Ramblers golfers. Sophomore Owen Sawyer and junior Paul Beauvy had the best individual rounds among the Cyclones’ golfers, in which both shot a score of 70. However, the two still sat behind the cumulative totals of Gutschewski.
Iowa State repeats in event-best round three
In the final round of play, the Cyclones produced their best performance of the whole event. The team finished with a round score of 272, the best round by any team throughout the entire competition. This strong finish gave Iowa State a 20-stroke victory over the rest of the field. The team finished the day at 12-under par and the event as a whole at nine-under par.
The Cyclones also boasted four golfers inside the top 10 individuals, with Sawyer and Gutschewski tied for fourth place, junior Zach May finishing in seventh, and Beauvy right behind him in eighth place.
This also marked the Iowa State’s second victory through three events so far this season.
With the end of the Zach Johnson Invitational, the Cyclones are set to head for the Big 12 Match Play in Hockley, Texas, from Oct. 7 to 9.
