AMES — The Cyclones look to end their four-game shutout streak in the Big 12 as they take on No. 24 Texas Tech to start their week of away games.
Coming off a 0-0 draw against Cincinnati, Iowa State collected its fifth shutout of the season and led the Bearcats to their first draw. Although they had a slow start, the Cyclones defense was a huge factor during the matchup, as they were able to limit the Bearcats shots to 16.
“Even when we are not playing well, we are capable of creating chances, and even when we are not doing things well enough, we don’t give away a lot of opportunities,” Iowa State head coach Matt Fannon said.
Iowa State’s aggressive front was able to limit Cincinnati’s opportunities, but it also collected 12 fouls and three yellow cards in the process.
Although faced with an injury crisis that saw four players leave the field in the second half on Thursday, Fannon is still very confident in his player’s abilities.
“The injury crises we have had this year have been a nightmare but we have also seen the quality and ability we have to go forward and make this season what it is,” Fannon said.
Offensively, senior forward Morgan Furmaniak led the team with four shots on goal, one of which was a near point due to a penalty shot.
“We know we have a lot to work on but we just keep growing. Walking away with a point is better than walking away with nothing,” Furmaniak said. “So we are going to prepare mentally and physically for Sunday and even though we are on the road it’s going to be another fight, but I think we got it.”
Texas Tech will face Iowa State after a 1-1 draw against Colorado. The Red Raiders battled endlessly and maintained possession of the ball throughout the game as they outshot their opponent 23 to five. Texas Tech is now sporting a 10-2-2 overall record and a 5-0-2 conference record.
Leading the Red Raiders is junior forward/midfielder Peyton Parsons, who has a team-high of seven goals and three assists. Following closely is sophomore forward Taylor Zdrojewski, who has six goals and three assists under her belt this season. Leading in assists for Texas Tech is redshirt junior defender Macy Blackburn, who has collected six assists and one goal this season.
For the Cyclones, junior forward Magdalena Keck leads with nine points and three goals this season. Furmaniak has the most shots on goal this season at 27 and has four goals. Closely following is senior midfielder Lauren McConnell, who previously earned her first goal this season against BYU and has collected two assists.
Iowa State looks to win its 200th collective game against No. 24 Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
