Another impressive art exhibit is currently showing at the Memorial Union Art Gallery. Titled “Art-Music-Poetry,” the exhibit showcases the work of 31 Iowa State students of various majors. It includes many different kinds of art, including paintings, ceramics, poems, digital design, photography and more.
All students who participated in this showing were asked to pick a song that they thought would be good to listen to while looking at their piece. As a result, all of the pieces in this gallery have QR codes next to them with the song that the student picked.
There were two people who chose the winners for each category and whose art would be displayed in the exhibit.
One of the judges was Matthew Olds, an artist based out of Seattle, who specializes in sculptures, paintings and mixed media.
Olds is a graduate of the University of Washington and has since opened a diverse fine arts studio with his wife. Olds was the judge for all of the art and apparel design.
The other judge was Leah Huizar, a writer and poet originally from California who now teaches at Drake University.
Huizar’s writing is inspired by the West Coast and how gender, religion and colonization have shaped it. Huizar was the judge for all of the poetry pieces.
There were a total of 142 submissions from 65 different students. These submissions included everything from fashion designs to mixed media sculptures to various types of paintings.
These pieces and prices for all pieces that are for sale can be found in the Memorial Union Art Gallery, right next to the food court on the first floor. The gallery is free to enter and is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. The exhibit will be open through March 12.
