Iowa State took second place at the Cowboy Classic to continue the momentum it started a week ago. Last week, the Cyclones finished on top in the Bell Bank “Pay It Forward” Collegiate held by Minnesota. This week, in a meet held by Wyoming, Iowa State stayed hot and took second place in a stacked field.
Leading the Cyclones was senior Luke Gutschewski, who shot eight-under-par. He was closely followed by junior Zach May at seven-under-par.
Gutschewski tied for fourth place with two other golfers, Jose Ramirez of Wichita State and Jake Wallis of Arkansas, while May tied for seventh with Ryan Abuan from San Diego.
Tying for 14th were sophomore Owen Sawyer and junior Paul Beauvy, who both shot four-under-par. They shared 14th with five others: Michael Senn of Cincinnati, Tegan Andrews of CSU Fullerton, Dane Huddleston of Utah Valley, Jin Nakao of UC Irvine and Gavin Aurilia of Southern California.
Finishing 62nd for Iowa State was sophomore Dianchao Wu at five-over-par. He finished tied with 10 other golfers.
Round 1
The Cyclones led after the first 18 with a collective 17-under-par, topping San Diego and Long Beach State at 13-under. Gutschewski did a lot of the heavy lifting with an eight-under for his first round, his best round this season.
Round 2
As teams got their grip on the course and started to make a push toward round three, the meet was suspended due to darkness. The round would continue on Tuesday morning. Gutschewski and Sawyer had the best rounds for Iowa State at two-under-par each.
Round 3
Iowa State let its lead go to Long Beach State but kept a two-stroke advantage over San Diego and Wichita State. May had the best round of the group, shooting three-under-par.
