AMES – After completing her second year at Iowa State, sophomore guard Kelsey Joens entered the transfer portal Monday to finish her college basketball career elsewhere.
Following in the footsteps of her two older sisters, who played at Iowa State years prior, Joens trailblazed her own path as a Cyclone and became the missing puzzle piece to complete the starting lineup for the 2024-25 season.
The 5-foot 10-inch guard found her momentum later in the season and started in 16 games her sophomore year. Overall, Joens played in 68 games during her two years at Iowa State, racking up 352 points in the process.
Joens ended her sophomore year at Iowa State averaging five points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists. She found a season-high of 13 points in the game against Houston, contributing to her total of five games in double figures.
Known for her fast pace, scrappy play and strength from the 3-point mark, Joens ended her season with a 43.1% success rate from the field, 43.8% from behind the arc and 77.5% from the free-throw line. Her improvement over the years leaves Joens with a career average of 5.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
Joens is the second Cyclone to enter the transfer portal, following junior guard Lily Hansford.
