After Iowa State began its season with a split series vs Illinois State, the team is ready to bring the action home as Oklahoma comes to town. The series will have two games set for Friday and Saturday night, both beginning at 7:30 p.m.
As the Cyclones gear up to take on tough competition, they look to gain their energy from an electric crowd. The team has implemented a “redout” theme for Friday’s game.
Following a tough season, Iowa State looks to be an underdog in this series. Last season, Oklahoma went 18-9-2 with 41 points and took fourth place in its conference.
The Cyclones went 7-23-3 with 17 points and took ninth place in their conference.
Despite the setback, Iowa State looks to channel its energy from the last series against Oklahoma, as the team completed a sweep during its 2019-20 season series.
Although dwelling on the past can heighten the energy of the Cyclones, the time for dominance is now as they prepare to take on a team that was ranked No.19 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) pre-season poll.
Iowa State currently sits fourth in the Midwest College Hockey (MCH) conference with a 1-0-1 record and three points. The Sooners sit third in the Western Collegiate Hockey League (WCHL) conference with a 1-1-1 record and four points on the season. With comparable season starts, the determining factor of the series will be the standout players.
In the MCH, Iowa State has five point leaders in the conference. Those players are John Kovarik, Dylan Hender, Benjamin Pfannenstein, Sam Eaton and Michael Mulkerrin.
Kovarik takes the second-place spot in the conference with five points and also leads the team with the most points as a forward. Similarly, Pfannenstein took the eighth-place spot in the conference and leads the team’s defensemen with four points.
The Sooners have the WCHL on lockdown with eight players as point leaders in their conference. With five points, the leading forward for Oklahoma is Tristan Davison. The team’s leading defenseman is Aaron Carr with two points.
As the Cyclones get ready to set the tone of the season on home ice, they must be ready to assert their dominance against a team that is ready to bring chaos.
The series will take place at the Ames Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m.
