AMES — Due to its numerous success points from around the court and through its deep roster, No. 10 Iowa State made historic records in a 132-68 win over Alcorn State on Wednesday.
Cyclones achieve new scoring record
Iowa State broke a nine-year men’s basketball record after securing a new high of 132 points scored in a game, surpassing the 2016 record of 130 points during the Cyclones’ game against Citadel.
“I mean, it’s great for our guys because of the work that they do,” head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “I mean, again, we are not necessarily in this to try to break records. We want to play to a standard and play the best we can in every possession.”
The Cyclones found loads of success points in their offense as they went 70% from the field and went 22-for-30 from behind the arc, alongside having nine Cyclone scorers, six of which scored in double digits.
In complement to its shining offense, Iowa State found other success points during the 40 minutes. Specifically, the Cyclones’ defense, which limited Alcorn State to 28 points in the first half and 40 in the second.
Iowa State forced 27 turnovers against the Braves, 17 of them coming from steals, and scored 48 points off turnovers.
“The coaches say it a lot, but it always starts with our defense,” junior guard Cade Kelderman said. “Just take what the defense gives you, make the simple play, be ready to shoot, be ready to drive, cut, et cetera.”
Kelderman was correct, as the Cyclones thrived off their defensive success early on, putting together a 17-point scoring run early in the first half, leading to a new record of the most points made in a game, new record of most 3-pointers made at 22, securing second best in highest field goal percentage and second most points secured in a first half.
“I mean, defense has to set the tone,” Otzelberger said. “Our defense has to set the tone for everything and how we dictate and physically we play with always translates to the same thing on the offensive end.”
Driving the most from their defensive success was junior forward Milan Momcilovic, who secured a team high and career best of five steals on the defensive end and complemented his achievement by securing a team high of 27 points.
“He works his tail off for moments like this,” Kelderman said. “The way he has been shooting it all year, so proud of him.”
Alongside Momcilovic, senior forward Joshua Jefferson secured his 80th collegiate win, securing 24 points, going 2-for-2 from deep and 10 assists to surpass 150 assists in a cardinal red and gold jersey.
Bench scores big
With senior guard Tamin Lipsey out, and the Cyclones going on major scoring runs, Iowa State played less and less of its starters, causing everyone to play and secure 49 bench points to boost the Cyclones’ win.
Playing in four games so far this season, and playing a total of 15 minutes, Kelderman matched his progress in the season by securing a season best of 15 minutes in one game.
Subbed in for freshman guard Killyan Toure at the 14:37 minute mark of the first half, Kelderman did his part as a point guard and made the Hilton crowd get on their feet when he made a 3-point shot from the corner to secure a 32-12 lead.
“Cade [Kelderman] has been a tremendous player to us,” Otzelberger said. “What I really value and appreciate about Cade [Kelderman] is he’s an everyday guy. He’s a competitor, he’s a winner and when you call his number, he’s going to step up for you and we saw that again here today.”
Kelderman was not the only player who took a break from sitting on the bench, as redshirt senior guard Nate Heise replaced Lipsey as a starter and contributed 13 points and went 3-for-3 from deep.
Toure, freshman guard Jamarion Batemon and freshman forward Dominykas Pleta became the big three to watch during their time on the hardwood. The triple threat put together 51 points altogether, with Batemon contributing the most as he secured 26 points, one point short of the leading scorer Momcilovic.
“It was amazing to just have that kind of fun with your guys,” Batemon said. “I mean, we work for it every day, so to see a kind of performance like that, it was amazing to see.”
Alongside the inclusion of the three freshmen, senior forward Eric Mulder, freshman forward Xzavion Mitchell and freshman guard Anthony Rise all helped contribute 37% of Iowa State’s overall score.
