No. 10 Iowa State visited top-ranked No. 1 Purdue in Mackey Arena to upset the Boilermakers on their home court with an 81-58 win Saturday.
The Cyclones handed Purdue its first home, non-conference loss since 2019 and made the 23-point deficit Purdue’s second-worst at home, and was the largest margin of defeat against a non-conference team.
Iowa State’s upset win is the highest-ranked road win ever for the Cyclones and marked the second-largest margin of victory over a top 25 team.
Momcilovic drives the dominating force
Coming off a 132-68 win against Alcorn State, where junior forward Milan Momcilovic had a dominating night posting a career best of most threes in a game, as he went 8-for-9 and secured a team high of 27 points.
Now up against the number one-ranked team in the nation, Momcilovic continued to find his momentum from behind the arc as he went 3-for-7 from deep, accumulating a team high of 20 points.
However, Momcilovic was not the only Cyclone to get hot from deep; following in a similar pattern was freshman guard Killyan Toure, who went 3-for-5 from deep and secured 13 points. Alongside them was senior forward Joshua Jefferson, who achieved three out of his four attempted shots and posted 11 points.
With five contributors from behind the arc, Iowa State secured a 47.% shooting rate from deep and secured 33 points, contributing 41% to the Cyclones’ overall score.
Lipsey back on court
In the second half of the Cyclones’ 83-82 win over St. John’s, senior guard Tamin Lipsey was tended to on the court with a groin injury. Sitting out the next three games, Lipsey made his return to the court to contribute to Iowa State’s success.
Lipsey played for 32 minutes on the hardwood, and although he made a limited amount of nine points, Lipsey’s leadership was used elsewhere.
Back in his usual leadership role, Lipsey made a team high of eight assists to contribute to the team’s overall 19.
Lipsey finished the game going 4-for-7 from the field, securing one shot from deep, five rebounds and eight assists.
Cyclones limited Purdue’s possessions
Playing the hardest they ever have on the defensive side, as Iowa State secured a total of 17 personal fouls, with Jefferson securing the most with five, was all worth it, as the Cyclones limited Purdue to 31 points in the first half and 27 in the second.
Iowa State led the Boilermakers offensively for over 29 minutes on the court. The Cyclones’ offensive success has always been a follow-up of their successful defense, as it plays hand in hand.
Iowa State had six blocks compared to Purdue’s two and had six steals over the 40 minutes. The Cyclones also found momentum, forcing 15 turnovers and securing 17 points, nine of which were fast break.
Purdue’s leading scorer during the game was senior guard Braden Smith, who was limited to 11 points, alongside limiting sophomore center Daniel Jacobsen and senior center Oscar Cluff each to 10.
