The Iowa State men’s golf team finished 14th with a score of +18 after posting a +5 as a team in the first round of the Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, California. The third round was cancelled due to severe wind conditions.
The finish was a down week compared to their third-place finish at the National Invitational Tournament three weeks ago.
The Cyclones first round was their best of the two days. Senior Paul Beauvy led the five-man crew, shooting even par, shooting two birdies and two bogeys in round one.
Juniors Owen Sawyer and Dianchao Wu shot both +1, with junior Jackson McCommon at +3. Sawyer recorded four birdies, a team high in round one.
Senior Zach May led the Cyclones with a score of +1 in round two. Wu recorded the Cyclones’ only eagle in the two days as he finished round two at +3.
After an even par first round, Beauvy finished the second round with a +4 score.
As a tournament, only three teams shot under par as a team: winners No. 27 Stanford -5, No. 14 Texas Tech -2 and No. 93 Oregon State -1.
Nevada +43, Yale +43 and Colorado State +46 finished as the bottom three teams in the tournament, proving just how hard the newest course at PGA West can be, in addition to wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour, which played a huge factor in every golfer’s shots.
Oregon’s Aidan Krafft, shooting -5, finished in first place at the tournament, with two Stanford players, Ratchanon Chantananuwat and Dean Greyserman, tied for second place shooting -3.
Individually, Beauvy and Wu +4 finished tied for 41st, Sawyer +6 placed tied for 55th and May and McCommon +8 tied for 66th.
The Cyclones hope to avoid the wind and potential rainy weather as they have a quick 11-day turnaround at their two-day event, March 1-2, in Bluffton, South Carolina, against 14 other teams for the Colleton River Collegiate hosted by Michigan State University.
