The Iowa State men’s golf team is looking to rebound as it travels to Bluffton, South Carolina, for the Colleton River Collegiate on Sunday and Monday.
The Cyclones head into the weekend coming off a shortened two-round 14th-place finish at the Prestige at PGA West.
Heavy winds and difficult course style showed early in both rounds as many teams struggled to get above par. As a team, Iowa State finished with a score of 586, +18 after the two rounds.
Senior Paul Beauvy and junior Dianchao Wu tied for 41st (+4) each, collecting three birdies, with Wu picking up an eagle, the third of his career.
Junior Owen Sawyer tied for 55th (+6) and carded a team-high seven birdies. Sawyer gained his 250th career birdie early in the second round, his career total standing at 255.
Senior Zach May and junior Jackson McCommon tied for 66th (+8), each tallying six birdies.
In the individual tournament, two Cyclones competed, with freshman Jesse Trembath making his debut. He earned a fifth-place finish (-1), earning eight birdies after two rounds. Sophomore Drew Hensen finished 30th (+9) while adding five birdies.
This weekend’s lineup consists of Beauvy, Sawyer, May, Wu, McCommon and Trembath (competing individually).
Beauvy remains on top of the career stroke average list at 71.55. Sawyer sits in the seventh spot with a 72.62 scoring average.
The Cyclones will be tested yet again, through a links-type course that plays through dense lowcountry forest as well as open scenic wetlands.
The Pete Dye Course at Colleton River features small, undulating greens that are well protected by pot bunkers.
The course was restored during the summer of 2016, with Dye himself praising the course.
“This is the best course I have ever built,” Dye said.
Iowa State, along with 15 other programs, including nine programs ranked inside the top-75, will tee off starting at 7 a.m. Sunday. Live scores can be checked on Clippd.
