YMCA Cap City Recap: Lewis takes the title, Haliburton named MVP

Members of the Iowa State Basketball Team took part in the third weekend of Cap City League games Sunday at Valley High School.

Central Iowa basketball fans filed into Valley High School Gym for the final night of the 2018 YMCA Cap City League games on Sunday night.

The slate of games featured two semifinal games followed by the championship game.

Game One (semifinal): Lions Club of Iowa 107, Waukee-Clive Veterinary Clinic 92

Tyrese Haliburton controlled the game for Lions Club of Iowa, contributing 30 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Alongside Haliburton, Iowa State’s Michael Jacobson did his damage in the paint, adding 16 points and 12 boards.

Waukee-Clive Veterinary Clinic primarily leaned on Drake’s Tremell Murphy. Murphy finished with 36 points and 12 rebounds.

Game Two (semifinial): Hannah Homes 99, Sparta Waste Services 78

The combination of Cap City League veteran Jordan Stotts and Iowa State’s Terrence Lewis propelled Hannah Homes to the championship.

Stotts — a former Sioux Falls player — dropped 27 points with 21 of them coming off of 3-pointers. Lewis also finished with 27 points.

Sparta Waste Services found an efficient game out of Iowa State’s George Conditt IV. Conditt IV had 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting in the loss.

Game Three (championship): Hannah Homes 121, Lions Club of Iowa 117

The undefeated Lions Club of Iowa fell behind 12-0 early in the game, but Tyrese Haliburton and Michael Jacobson stormed back.

Haliburton and Jacobson helped cut the lead to two at half, trailing Hannah Homes 65-63. The two teams went back and forth in the second half, but Hannah Homes ultimately edged out Lions Club of Iowa.

In arguably the biggest Cap City League upset of all-time, Terrence Lewis put Hannah Homes on his back to win the trophy.

Lewis capped his Cap City season with 42 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jordan Stotts played a big role again for Hannah Homes, pouring in 30 points.

Haliburton and Jacobson did most the heavy lifting for Lions Club of Iowa, shooting 62 of the 94 shots taken. Haliburton dropped 41 points and Jacobson had 37 points in the loss.

The Cap City League fans also voted on the league’s Defensive MVP and Overall MVP during the final night of action.

Drake’s Nick McGlynn snagged the Defensive MVP and Iowa State guard Tyrese Haliburton was named the overall MVP.
