The regular season finale for Iowa State’s men’s golf team has arrived, and with it, a trip closer to home as it heads to Columbia, Missouri, for its first tournament in the Midwest this year at the Tiger Invitational.
The Cyclones will compete in the tournament hosted by Mizzou Monday and Tuesday in what will be their final tune-up before the Big 12 Championship on April 27.
Coming off an 11th-place finish last week at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, Iowa State will look to steady things with its lineup of Paul Beauvy, Owen Sawyer, Dianchao Wu, Zach May, Jackson McCommon and Julian Geerebaert, who will compete as an individual.
Second day woes
At the Cowboy Classic, Iowa State ended the first day with the tournament’s lowest round score as a team in the first round.
Beauvy was also notably in a four-player tie for first, but things would go south for both him and the rest of the Cyclones as they wrapped up rounds two and three on the second day of competition.
Beauvy, while starting on a 27-hole streak without a bogey to end the first day, started day two with multiple bogeys, including a double-bogey.
The damage wouldn’t stop with just Beauvy, though, as the rest of the Cyclones would also falter, going from shooting -16 in round one to +17 in round three.
Looking ahead
Iowa State’s performance on the first day of the Cowboy Classic shouldn’t be overlooked, however.
It’s round one performance left a sense of poise for the postseason, as the team shot their second-lowest round score of the season and 10th-lowest in school history. All while leading the field in eagles and ranking second in par 5 scoring at the end of day one.
Currently, Iowa State sits at No. 79 in the national rankings and has four top-five finishes on the season.
With No. 39 Kansas participating in the Tiger Invitational, a good showing for Iowa State could build confidence and help measure its chances for the Big 12 Championship.
