AMES — Iowa State track and field wrapped up the outdoor regular season at home on senior night, hosting the Cyclone Twilight.
The Cyclones found major success in the running events, including a 29-year-old record being broken.
Iowa State will look to carry the momentum into the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Tucson, Arizona, May 14-16.
Carr breaks 29-year-old record in 110m hurdles
Senior Alec Carr had set big goals for his final regular-season meet of the season at home. On a day dedicated to honoring the seniors, Carr stepped up to deliver the night’s biggest moment.
In the prelims, Carr opened with a personal best time of 13.55 seconds. In the finals, Carr responded with a time of 13.48 seconds, breaking a 29-year record of 13.49 seconds set by Jason Woods.
The senior from Sunbury, Ohio nows owns two Iowa State hurdle records after setting the indoor 60-meter hurdles program record prior to the outdoor season.
Currently, Carr ranks 18th in the nation and 10th in the West region, which puts him in a great spot with the top 48 from each region moving on to the NCAA West Prelims further down the postseason line.
Women’s 1500m race
The 1500m event turned out to be one of the best showings of the night for the Cyclones, with multiple runners turning in personal best times while moving up the school record list.
Freshman Mercy Kibet took home first place for Iowa State with a time of 4:15.32, which now ranks as the fourth fastest time in program history.
Senior Maelle Porcher found her own success in the event, setting a personal-best time of 4:17.11, which now ranks fifth all-time at Iowa State.
Redshirt senior Riley Beach capped off her regular season with a big personal best time of 4:19.76.
Steeplechase: Last but not least
The Cyclones capped off senior night in style by sweeping the steeplechase events and finding momentum heading into the postseason.
Sophomore Joash Ruto captured first place for the men’s team with a time of 8:31.87.
In the women’s race, junior McKinley Wheeler came out in first for the Cyclone women’s team with a time of 10:58.91.
