Republicans to decide Secretary of Agriculture candidate at convention

As most primary candidates called to congratulate the victors of their race or celebrated their own victories, one race was left still undecided: the Republican nomination for secretary of agriculture.

None of the five candidates received the 35 percent of the vote necessary to secure the nomination during the June 5 primary, leaving the race to be decided at the Iowa GOP State Convention on Saturday.

As early polling results were reported, the race appeared to be a close contest between incumbent Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Sen. Dan Zumbach. However, as more counties reported, Naig built a solid lead.

Naig came the closest to winning the nomination, falling just 0.26 percent short of the 35 percent threshold.

He assumed office in May of last year after then Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey became Under Secretary of Agriculture for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services. Prior to filling the position, he had served as Northey’s Deputy Secretary of Agriculture since 2013.

Entering the convention, Naig is seen as the favorite, though Zumbach is still considered a contender.

Currently, Zumbach represents District 45 in the Iowa Senate and chairs the Agriculture Committee.

Other challengers include Craig Lang of Poweshiek County, Ray Gaesser of Corning and Chad Ingels of Fayette County. None of them received more than 20 percent of the vote.
