Cyclones face three teams after short week
February 6, 2018
The Iowa State Cyclones tennis team is traveling to Daytona Beach, Florida, this week and will play two teams on Feb. 8.
The Cyclones will first play the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at 9 a.m. and following the wildcats will be the Embry-Riddle Eagles at 2 p.m.
The Cyclones will also play against the Stetson Hatters in Deland, Florida, on Feb. 10 at 9 a.m.
Iowa State is looking to bounce back from its most recent loss against the Illinois State Redbirds with a 4-1 loss.
The head coach of the Iowa State women’s tennis team, Armando Espinosa, was named Iowa State’s wins leader with his 90th career win with a 6-1 win over Illinois-Chicago last weekend.
“We played very well against Illinois-Chicago but as we played Illinois State we were just not the same team,” Espinosa said. “Hopefully this week we can come back and play like the tennis players we are and get some wins.”
The Cyclones were victorious against Illinois-Chicago but were defeated by Illinois State.
“We did not do a lot of practicing this week because we had gotten back on Sunday and we needed a day off,” Espinosa said. “On Tuesday, we had a team meeting and talked about what we can do better as a team. We are trying to keep them rested for the long week ahead so they are ready to compete.”
The Embry-Riddle Eagles’ last match was cancelled due rain, therefore having a longer rest period.
“We just have to take one match at a time, we cannot get ahead of ourselves. We have to take care of business,” Espinosa said.
The Cyclones will be going up against three teams this week, two on Thursday, Feb. 8, and one on Saturday, Feb. 10.
“We are trying to prepare for the outdoor matches,” Espinosa said. “We are trying to get used to the humidity, this week will be a great test for us.”
