Iowa State defeats Fresno State with help from heavyweight Marcus Harrington

After facing Fresno State earlier in the season at the Virginia Duals, Iowa State was set to face the Big 12 newcomers for the first time in conference play. Even without Ian Parker and Sam Colbray, Iowa State was able to secure a close win against the Bulldogs after a clinching match from Marcus Harrington.
At 125-pounds, Iowa State’s Sinjin Briggs fell to Sean Williams by a 10-2 major decision giving Fresno State a 4-0 lead.
The next match 133-pounder Markus Simmons pinned Fresno State’s Trevor Williams in 6:06 allowing Iowa State to take a 6-4 lead.
Iowa State’s 141-pounder, Parker, was unable to wrestle for Iowa State so the Cyclones was forced to forfeit the 141-pound match. Fresno State then led 10-6.
Wrestling at 149-pounds, Iowa State’s Jarrett Degen was unable to muster up a comeback in the third period and fell to Khristian Olivas 14-13. Degen was three seconds short of obtaining a point for riding time and drew three stalling points against Olivas in the third.
Chase Straw, Iowa State’s 157-pounder, was able rack up back points and earned a tech fall against Greg Gaxiola, 19-3. That win cut the deficit to 13-11 in favor of Fresno State.
At 165-pounds, Fresno State did not have a wrestler to compete allowing Iowa State to take a 17-13 lead.
The next match, Fresno State’s Dominic Kincaid beat Danny Bush in a 7-4 decision in the 174-pound match.
At 184-pounds, senior Dane Pestano extended the lead to 23-16 for the Cyclones with a pin with only seconds left in the third against Angel Solis.
Instead of Colbray representing Iowa State in the 197-pound match, Joe Teague faced Josh Hokit who pinned Teague in 1:43 cutting Iowa State’s lead to 23-22 with only the heavyweights left to wrestle.
In the last match of the night, Marcus Harrington earned a takedown in sudden victory against A.J. Nevills to clinch a 26-22 win for Iowa State against Fresno State.
