2017 Gridiron Staff Picks: Week 6

Brian Mozey

Every week during the year, Brian Mozey, Aaron Marner, Jack MacDonald and a special guest make their predictions for the Iowa State football game. Here are their predictions for the Cyclones’ week six game against Oklahoma at 11 a.m. on FOX.

Brian Mozey, Sports Editor (4-0)

Winner: Oklahoma

Score: 42-21

I’ll make it simple. Oklahoma has a Heisman candidate in quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Sooners are hosting the game and they’re ranked third in the country. Enough said.

Aaron Marner, Assistant Sports Editor (2-2)

Winner: Oklahoma

Score: 44 – 17

Look, let’s not kid ourselves here.

There’s a reason the line for this game opened around Oklahoma -27.5 and there’s a reason Iowa State has a record of five wins, two ties and 74 losses to Oklahoma in the history between these two schools.

Oklahoma is one of college football’s most storied programs. Iowa State is, well, Iowa State.

The Cyclones simply don’t have the firepower to keep up with Oklahoma. Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield is the second best player in the nation behind Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, and Oklahoma’s offense is among the nation’s most prolific.

The Sooners are going to score early and often, and I don’t think Iowa State has enough weapons to keep up. Give me Oklahoma by about four touchdowns.

Jack MacDonald, Assistant Sports Editor (2-2)

Winner: Oklahoma

Score: 38-21

Much like my wonderful and fellow assistant sports editor, Aaron, I too have little faith in an Iowa State team that put up only seven points against Texas a week ago.

Quite frankly, Oklahoma has Baker Mayfield and Iowa State doesn’t. The Sooner’s man handled Ohio State 31-16, followed by Mayfield stabbing the OU flag deep in the Buckeye logo. Might I remind you, this was on the road in Columbus and they throttle a good Ohio State team.

Back to Iowa State and simply put, you can’t beat the No. 3 team in the country when you score seven points. Sure they have put up 40 points on three separate occasions, but they haven’t faced a defense that can contend for a National Championship.

Unless a miracle happens, Iowa State will fall to 2-3 and Oklahoma will stay glorious.

Dani Gehr, New Editor of Politics and Administration (0-0)

Winner: Oklahoma

Score: 28-7

I cover the politics and administration section. I am the only person in a sports obsessed family that doesn’t follow sports at all. I was chosen as this weeks guest pick for god knows why.

Despite this, I did my research (I called my dad). Considering that Oklahoma is ranked third in the country and the spread is 28 points favoring Oklahoma, it is likely the Cyclones will not come out of this victorious.
