Cyclones dominate Creighton in season opener
August 18, 2017
The Iowa State soccer team started its 2017 campaign off with a dominant 3-0 win over the Creighton Bluejays Friday night at the Cyclones Sports Complex.
Earning the first shut-out of her career was true freshman goalie Dayja Schwichtenberg, thanks to the defenses’ performance.
“It’s expected,” said redshirt junior midfielder Brooke Tasker. “Dayja came in and we all knew [the type of player] she is. Hendon is out right now, she stepped up. We’re very proud of her.”
Iowa State dominated the game in the sense of controlling the ball, keeping the play on the Bluejays’ side of the field for most of the night.
It took some pressure off of Schwichtenberg in her first game as a Cyclone.
“She had a little anxiety in the exhibition game,” coach Tony Minatta said. “It was nice, even though it was towards the end of the game, she got to make a couple saves and give her some confidence.”
In the first half, neither team was able to get on the scoreboard.
“We came out strong in the first 15 minutes, but then we kind of relaxed and Creighton really started taking it to us,” said coach Tony Minatta. “At halftime, the starters realized that, ‘hey, we can’t relax against anybody.’”
Late in the first half, Minatta subbed out four players at the same time in an effort to spark the offense, but the half still ended with a 0-0 tie.
The first score was from Tasker in the 49th minute, giving the Cyclones a spark to the start of the second half.
From then on, it was all Iowa State.
Merin Mundt tallied the second score of the game on a free kick that was closer to the midfield than the goal.
The ball snuck through the skirmish in front of the net untouched, and eventually found its way into the back of the net. That gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead with 17 minutes to play.
Carly Langhurst scored the third goal, making it three goals scored by three different players for the Cyclones.
“I think we have some very good attacking players in the forward positions,” Minatta said. “You want to be able to get goals from different people, and the pressure we put on that goalie created opportunities.”
