Iowa State sweeps Drake in volleyball exhibition
August 12, 2017
Iowa State volleyball faced off against the Drake Bulldogs in an exhibition on Saturday.
The Cyclones swept all three sets against Drake (25-11, 25-13, 25-5) in the team’s first action of the fall.
The exhibition doesn’t affect either team’s record, but Libero Hali Hillegas saw some positives to the match.
“I think being able to play against another team and see how far we’ve come has really benefitted us and [playing helps us] see what we can work on next,” Hillegas said.
Iowa State dominated the beginning of the first set, jumping out to a 15-2 lead. The Bulldogs fought back, cutting the Cyclone lead to 10.
Iowa State used efficient play paired with Hillegas flying around the court to put away Drake in the first set.
By the second set, Drake had woken up and got off to a better start. Iowa State still led 5-2 early on.
Midway through the set, Drake and Iowa State were deadlocked in a point, but the Cyclones prevailed after multiple Hillegas diving saves.
Iowa State led the second set 24-10, but the Cyclones struggled to snag the final point needed.
Drake rattled off three straight points, but a Hannah Bailey kill secured the set win for Iowa State.
In the third set, the Cyclones were hitting on all cylinders.
Iowa State put the set out of reach early on, racing out to an 18-2 lead. The Bulldogs had nothing left in the tank, eventually dropping the final set 25-5.
Alexis Conaway, Samara West, Josie Herbst and Jess Schaben led the Iowa State attack, all finishing with five or more kills. Hali Hillegas led the team with 10 digs.
The Cyclones will be back in action on August 19 in the Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage inside Hilton Coliseum.
