Police charge suspect following morning robbery
July 14, 2017
At approximately 9:30 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a robbery at the HyVee Drugstore located on Main Street, according to a release from the department.
Noah Sanderson, 37 years of age from Ames, was charged with robbery in the first degree, which is a Class “B” Felony. Sanderson, fitting the description given by callers within the store, was located by officers in the grass area south of the Depot where he was taken into custody after being subdued by a Taser. Commander Geoff Huff of Ames Police said there were lots of witnesses to point out the suspect when officers arrived on the scene.
According to a 911 call and security footage, a person entered the store wearing an orange hoodie pulled up over his head, a bandanna covering his face and sunglasses. He approached the clerk and said he had a knife and didn’t want to have to use it, demanding money from the cash register. He then ran from the store with a small amount of cash.
The location was a block from the police department.
“This is one of the very, very infrequent cases we catch somebody red-handed,” Huff said.
Most of the money was recovered and there were no injuries to employees of the HyVee or officers, according to the release.
