Semi-Toned performed at Stephens Auditorium Thursday, April 20 at 7p.m.

The curtain raised and 12 young men in burgundy coats jaunted around the Stephens Auditorium stage to an a cappella remix of “Low” by Flo Rida and “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars.

There was also an Iowa State all girls a cappella group that opened up for Semi-Toned. They performed six songs including classics to songs like “Love Me Like You Do” by Ellie Goulding.

With excellent singing, dancing and humor, the group kept the audience in awe with amazing stage presence and audience interaction. They were also instrument free the entire time, which you wouldn’t be able to tell from just listening.

At one point they pulled up a girl from the audience to show that they didn’t come to just “sing, dance, make fools of themselves,” but to also charm the audience. One by one each boy serenaded the girl.

The show was filled with a wide variety of songs that would appeal to everyone’s tastes: from the “Macarena” to Beyoncé’s “7/11.” They also had many songs that appealed to the younger audience that was present. They included “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan and “When Somebody Loved Me” from Toy Story 2 in an emotional tribute from the graduating members of the group to the others.

The last song they chose to sing was dedicated to the American audience that the British group was performing for. They joked that it was a hard choice, but they finally came up with the perfect song. Humorously they chose the United States National Anthem, which forced the audience to give them a well deserved standing ovation.
