The Dub H Hip Hop club at Iowa State University celebrated their 15 year anniversary on Friday night with an astounding performance. The night revolved around the theme of family and how Dub H has influenced its members’ lives over the past 15 years.

In between each performance, a current member or alumni of Dub H would give a short speech on how the club has affected their life. It always seemed to come back to the idea of family. There were multiple couples who met through Dub H and are now married. Many members spoke on how they allowed Dub H to become the focus of their entire college experience.

The showcase included videos of alumni who could not make it to the show, but wanted to send a message. There were even some fun video skits that the members created to celebrate the anniversary.

Dub H choreographers gave strong performances throughout the show. Each dance was filled with a different type of spunk and style as the members performing put their personalities into them. There was never a lull on the stage or in the audience, as every single person in the auditorium tapped their feet with smiles on their faces.

Friday night allowed the audience to expand their knowledge and understanding of what exactly Dub H is, and what it means to it’s members.

Mariah Koster, a junior, is currently spending her sixth semester in Dub H. Koster has been dancing since she was three years old, but she assures everyone that prior dancing experience is not what Dub H is all about.

“My favorite thing about dance, and my favorite thing about Dub H, is that it is a one size fits all thing. And unfortunately, in society, that is not the case for most things,” Koster said. “We have people that speak different languages, we have people that are different genders, different races, different religions and different majors.”

The diversity of the club was visible on stage, as members of different experience levels and general backgrounds formed a bond through the music.

“It is really beautiful that we can all come together for dance,” Koster said.

The club members expressed their gratitude for each other on Friday night, but they were also sending out positive vibes and encouraging messages for anyone interested in joining.

“When we say no experience required, we mean no experience required,” said Jack Chisholm, a junior, also in his sixth semester in Dub H. “Even if you aren’t good at it, everyone supports you and helps you. It is incredible.”

With a large group of seniors performing their last show on Friday, the finale was emotional. The night ended with an upbeat dance number choreographed by senior Jill Buckendahl along with a video message prepared by the younger members for the graduating members. While the graduating members move forward with their lives, the encouraging message for potential new members was very clear.

“Just go for it, because in the end, even if you have never danced in your life, if you have danced your entire life, it’s all about that love and passion between dancers and between people,” Koster said.

Not one person left the Ames Auditorium Friday night without catching the family vibe that the Dub H club provides or a smile on their face, and that was what the show, and Dub H, is all about.
