Cyclone’s Men’s golf team in middle of the pack on first day of ASU Thunderbird Invitational.

The first day of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Arizona ended Saturday and the Iowa State’s Men’s Golf Team are currently in seventh spot, scoring 559 (277-282).

Currently winning is host ASU with a score of 531 (266-265) trailing behind them is Colorado State 550 (276-274)

Senior Nick Voke 137 (68-69) and redshirt junior Ruben Sondjaja 137 (68-69) currently lead the team as the highest in the individual’s board, tied for 9th.

Freshman Sam Vincent is tied for 26th spot, scoring 141 (70-71). During the first round, Vincent could not over the par and did not go over until his sixth hole in the second round.

Senior Denzel Ieremia continues to land in top-50, as he ends the day tied for 42nd. He scored 144 (71-73) with 7 birdies in the first round.

Fellow freshman, and Iowa native, Tripp Kinney ended the first two rounds tied for 71st spot, scoring 151 (78-73). He scored two birdies in the second round.

This is the Cyclone’s first competition since the General Hackler Championship on March 11th, that ended early due to the weather. The Cyclones ended in 11th spot.

In recent history, the Cyclone have enjoyed success in the ASU thunderbird invitational. Since the 2012-13 season, the Cyclones have finished within the first eight best teams. Their best finish came last year during the 2015-16 season, winning the invitational having Voke ending runner-up.

Competition will resume on March 19th, for the final day of competition.
