A line wrapped around Wooly’s and down East Locust Street in downtown Des Moines Saturday night as fans arrived early to claim their spots for musical guest Jojo’s ‘Mad Love’ tour.

Jojo found her way to Des Moines after a few cancellations due to illness. She had to reschedule the three shows immediately prior to Des Moines, causing some flustered hearts to turn to relief as she announced her return on Instagram this past week.

“I was pretty worried,” said Nick Allmon, a senior at Iowa State who attended the concert on Saturday, “I checked her Facebook every day, but the show still went on and I’m glad she is feeling better.”

The show opened with special guest Stanaj who showed off his falsetto during his song “Ain’t Love Strange” and continued to prove his talent during his acapella cover of “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. He sang all of his songs from his newly released EP and even gave the crowd a sneak preview of a song that had not been produced or named.

“I had never heard of him [Stanaj] before tonight but he had a really strong voice and was amazing live,” Allmon said. “I definitely went on his Spotify after the concert.”

Stanaj’s set was very short and sweet but did not lack talent nor hype as he pumped the crowd up for Jojo.

“Let’s hear it for Jojo guys, she wasn’t feeling very good last week,” Stanaj said.

Jojo absolutely surged energy and excitement, and the audience reciprocated. She began her set with her song “Clovers” from her Mad Love album. She even added some funk as she danced with her microphone stand. At one point she invited a fan up to the stage and gave him a glorified lap dance to her song “High Heels”, complete with a blindfold that had “Mad Love” sewn on it.

“This song always makes me feel a little frisky,” Jojo said.

Despite having been on complete vocal rest for the past week, Jojo gave an incredibly talented performance. She slowed things down and serenaded the audience with an emotional performance of her song “Music”.

“I really love Jojo,” said Katherine Apland, a senior at Iowa State who attended the concert on Saturday. “I got introduced to her new stuff by a friend but her vocals are powerful and her songs are relatable.”

Jojo took time to introduce every single person on stage and thank the Des Moines crowd for their love and support. She closed the show with her song “Mad Love” and then briefly exited the stage before her encore song “Good Thing”.

Together Jojo and Stanaj put on a powerful show. The energy from the two of them along with the crowd surged through Wooly’s, and everyone could tell that Jojo was ready to be back on stage.
