The Iowa State (7-9) softball team opened the St. George Red Desert Classic with two losses Friday. The Cyclones dropped game one to UCSB (6-10), followed by a loss to UNLV (11-5) in game two.

Iowa State started sophomore Emma Hylen at pitcher in game one of the day. The Cyclones surrendered the first run of the contest on a UCSB solo home run in the top of the second inning. Savannah Sanders entered the game to get Iowa State out of the inning.

Iowa State tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. Cathlin Bingham stole her fifth base of the season, tying her total from last season. Talyn Lewis hit an RBI double with two outs to bring Bingham home, making the score 1-1.

The Gauchos added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 4-1 entering the seventh inning.

A Cyclone rally in the bottom of the seventh would pressure the Gauchos, but would ultimately come up short as Iowa State fell 4-3.

Pitcher Brianna Weilbacher started the Cyclones off on the right track in game two with a 1-2-3 inning to open the game.

UNLV got on the scoreboard first, taking advantage of an Iowa State error in the second inning.

The Rebels would tack on two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The Iowa State offense was held scoreless until the seventh inning when Kaila Konz hit an RBI single to score Sami Williams. That would be it for the Cyclones as they fell 3-1 to the Rebels.

Iowa State will return to action Saturday against Nevada and Utah State at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
