Thursday evening’s meeting of Inter-Residence Hall Association, featured two guest speakers, a discussion on prison labor and the passing of two bills.

The meeting opened with presentations pertaining to Iowa State’s use of prison labor to provide furniture for campus. The group discussed ways that Iowa State could stop using prison labor, but also heard arguments as to why using prison labor is beneficial.

The first bill discussed was titled Geoffrey Tie-Due and Twister. Geoffrey Hall asked for $287.50 to cover the cost of 50 t-shirts for the hall event taking place in early April.

The bill was passed unanimously.

The second bill discussed was the 5th Annual Volleybrawl. The event is an event hosted by Freshman Council, where teams consisting of up to 10 members create and dress to a theme that they choose.

The registration deadline to obtain a t-shirt is March 24th, and the final registration date is March 31st.

The bill asked for $750 be transferred from the IRHA account to the Freshman Council account to help cover the event. All misspent funds would be reverted back to IRHA.

The bill was passed unanimously.

The third bill discussed was titled Freeman’s History Saver. Freeman Hall asked for $300 to help preserve antiques and historical items in the hall.

The bill failed with a vote of 4-20-3.

IRHA meets every Thursday at 7:30pm in the Memorial Union.
