The Eating Disorder Coalition of Iowa is hosting a conference March 3 and 4 in Des Moines in honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which spans from Feb. 27 to March 5.

The two day conference will be full of informational and empowering activities.

The schedule consists of personal recovery stories, keynote speakers and therapy sessions. The event will also include body image and eating disorder awareness student organization officer training and educational sessions for students, teachers, coaches, parents and families.

Some topics that will be covered at the conference include fitness, substance abuse, binge eating, family dynamics and forming an understanding of eating disorders.

Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, sexuality or background. In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men will struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

Despite the prevalence, severity and complexity of these illnesses, myths and stigma keep individuals struggling from seeking the help needed to return to health.

The Eating Disorder Coalition of Iowa is an independent, non-profit organization which works to provide Iowans a central place for prevention, hope and resources.

Every year at the conference, EDCI assembles professionals to educate and inform people about their mission.

A majority of the EDCI mission is to prevent eating disorders. They also work to promote hope, acceptance, understanding and healing for all impacted by eating disorders.
