Softball splits on second day of Louisiana Classic

The Iowa State (1-2) softball team split two games on day two of the Louisiana Classic on Saturday in Lafayette, Louisiana. Iowa State dropped the first game of the day to DePaul (1-2), but picked up their first win of the season against Southern Miss (1-2).

Game One – DePaul

In game one of the day, Iowa State fell to DePaul 3-2. Sophomore Emma Hylen got the start for the Cyclones at pitcher. Errors continued to plague the Cyclones as two of the three Blue Demon runs were unearned.

Iowa State started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out RBI single from Rachel Hartman to score Kelsey McFarland. Errors continued to hurt Iowa State as DePaul scored two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. Later in the inning, the Blue Demons added another run with an RBI single to make the score 3-1.

Savannah Sanders entered the game in the top of the fifth inning to pitch for the Cyclones. Sanders was able to get the Cyclones out of a jam after the Blue Demons had loaded the bases.

Cathlin Bingham and McFarland hit back-to-back singles to start off the bottom of the fifth inning causing a pitching change from DePaul. Hartman hit her second RBI of the day to cut into the Blue Demon lead, 3-2.

A 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh kept the Blue Demon lead at one, giving the Cyclones one last chance in the bottom of the inning.

Iowa State threatened, getting runners on first and second base, but left them stranded.

Game Two — Southern Mississippi 

In the second game of the day, Iowa State picked up its first win of the Jamie Trachsel era, defeating Southern Miss 6-4. Brianna Weilbacher was given the nod at pitcher against the Golden Eagles.

Iowa State struck immediately in the top of the first inning on a RBI single from McFarland to score Kirsten Caudle.

Southern Miss responded in the bottom of the second inning, scoring on a fielding error from the Cyclones. The Golden Eagles walked in another run and ended the inning leading 2-1.

Iowa State answered in a big way in the third inning. Tayln Lewis brought home McFarland with a sacrifice-fly, knotting the game 2-2. In the next at bat, Kaylee Bosworth blasted a two-run home run to left-center field. Logan Schaben was brought home from an RBI double by Sami Williams to make the score 5-2.

Southern Miss added two runs of their own in the fourth inning cutting into Iowa State’s lead, 5-4.

Weilbacher exited the game with 8 strikeouts in four innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits. Sanders came in as her reliever and ended the inning with a strikeout to end the inning.

Williams raced home on a Southern Miss error in the top of the sixth inning to extend the Cyclone lead to 6-4.

Iowa State would hold strong on defense to keep the Golden Eagles at four runs and secure the victory.

Iowa State is back in action Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. against Ball State and a rematch versus DePaul.
