The Inter-Residence Hall Association met Thursday evening to debate over several bills, including one to help bring Tony-award winning Hamilton actor, Leslie Odom Jr., to campus.

The bill asked for $3,000 from IRHA to contribute in bringing Odom to campus. In exchange for the funding, the group would be advertised on posters for the event.

The event will be free for Iowa State students and the general public, and will include a lecture from Odom, followed by a four-song concert from the actor.

Multiple IRHA members had concerns about the amount they were being asked to spend. Many other departments at Iowa State have donated to the event, but with dollar ranges in the hundreds, not thousands.

After a long discussion, the group determined that the amount it was being asked to spend was not worth the advertising it would receive in return.

The bill was turned down with a vote of 3-27-2.

A second bill was discussed, dealing with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The animal science department asked for $1,600 from IRHA to provide scholarships for students participating in a quadrathlon that will take place Feb. 15.

The bill was voted down 1-31-0 due to concerns over whether residence halls would benefit from the use of funds, with only four students competing in the quadrathlon.

A new bill was introduced to discuss the starting date for community advisers for the 2017 academic year. A starting date of Aug. 1, 2017, is set for CAs to come to campus and begin training for the coming year.

CAs would be unable to return to any outside commitments, such as internships and summer jobs, after the first day of training, which would interfere with current CAs looking to come back for the coming year.

The bill unanimously passed to be sent up to higher chambers of power.

A bill was introduced to scrap a bylaw that states at least five members of parliament must be a part of the leadership committee. Parliament was finding it difficult to find members to be a part of the Leadership Committee, often having to force members to participate. A new bylaw, 4.4.1.2, would be reassigned to the current bylaw, 4.4.1.1.

Voting was postponed until the next meeting.

Another new bill was introduced, from the Barton-Lyon-Freeman Residence Hall. The hall asked for $3,500 to pay for an annual ski trip that will include up to 175 students.

Voting was postponed until the next meeting.

IRHA will meet next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
