On Saturday afternoon Iowa State will seek to end a three-game losing skid against No. 22 Kansas State inside Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones (10-8, 1-6 Big 12) enter the game against the Wildcats (15-4, 5-2 Big 12) coming off a loss to No. 2 Baylor. The Cyclones held the Lady Bears to their second lowest scoring total of the season, but it was still not enough to come away with the win.

Junior guard Jadda Buckley says the team confidence is lower than it usually is, but thinks they can bounce back with a win on Saturday.

“I think [winning] is going to be huge, especially being at home,” Buckley said. “If we can get one, get on a role, get some momentum and confidence back, I think that will be great for the team.

“Obviously, we’re a little down, it’s not the best record. But at the same time we know we have to keep our heads up and we’re going to stick together.”

Like many other teams the Cyclones have played this season, the Wildcats run multiple defensive set-ups. Iowa State has struggled when they have seen multiple defenses so far this season.

The biggest producer for the Wildcats is their senior center Breanna Lewis. Lewis leads Kansas State in scoring, rebounds, and blocked shots. Coach Bill Fennelly knows it will be no easy task to try and slow her down.

“It seems like every game we run into a good big player, Breanna Lewis is certainly one of those kids,” Fennelly said. “I think the big thing, like any time you play a great player, is to limit the touches they get in their comfort zone, don’t give up offensive rebounds, do what you can, and hopefully they miss a couple too.”

One of the major keys that have helped the Iowa State offense over the last handful of games has been the play of sophomore guard Bridget Carleton. In conference play, Carleton has averaged 16.9 points and 5.4 rebounds. She was also the leading scorer against Baylor with 17 points.

A player that usually provides a big spark for the offense is senior guard Seanna Johnson. However, Johnson was held scoreless against Baylor, going 0-7 from the field. Johnson talked about her performance and what it is going to take for her to break out of the slump.

“Honestly, I think it was just one of those nights,” Johnson said. “They’re a really good defensive team, they have a lot of length. Especially with [Alexis] Prince guarding me, that really altered my shot.

“I got to have better focus coming into games like that, I just have to rely on my teammates. They did a really good job of getting me the ball, I just need to translate and make those shots.”
