Iowa State moves to consolation bracket after day 2

Brian Mozey

The Iowa State wrestling team had four wrestlers in the championship quarterfinals to start day two, but ended the day with zero remaining in the championship bracket.

The Cyclones still sent three wrestlers in the consolation bracket, though, for the final day of the NCAA Championship on Saturday.

Earl Hall

Hall started the day in the championship quarterfinal against Nahshon Garrett from Cornell and lost in a close 5-0 match. Then, Hall went 1-1 in the consolation bracket with a win against Dom Forys from Pittsburgh and a loss against Jordan Conaway from Penn State.

Hall will be wrestling in the seventh place match against Jade Rauser from Virginia in the 133-pound weight class.

Tanner Weatherman

Weatherman had the same result as Hall in the quarterfinal championship with a 11-5 loss against No. 1 seed Alex Dieringer from Oklahoma State. In his first consolation match, Weatherman received his last loss to David McFadden from Virginia Tech.

Weatherman has been eliminated from the NCAA Championship and has completed his college wrestling career for Iowa State.

Lelund Weatherspoon

Weatherspoon was the sole Cyclone wrestler to advance to the semifinals of the 174-pound championship bracket. Weatherspoon lost 8-2 to Myles Martin from Ohio State and will continue his run in the consolation bracket.

Weatherspoon will be wrestling Zach Epperly from Virginia Tech in the semifinals of the consolation bracket for a run at third place in the 174-pound weight class.

Pat Downey

Downey also fell to Brett Pfarr from Minnesota in a major decision in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket. Downey is still running in the consolation bracket after wins against Shawn Scott from Northern Illinois and Brett Harner from Princeton.

Downey will be starting the final day by wrestling Nathan Burak from Iowa in the semifinals in the 197-pound consolation bracket.

Weatherspoon and Downey is still in contention to win third place for their respective weight classes, while Hall is wrestling for third place in the final day of the NCAA Championship.
