Victory in Knoxville for ISU Gymnastics

The Iowa State Gymnastics team traveled south to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Ozone Collegiate Gymnastics Competition Saturday. The Cyclones attained a solid execution to get their first road win of two in the young season.

The Cyclones came into the night as rookies in this particular classic to face Pittsburgh, US Air Force Academy and Southeast Missouri. None the less, ISU showed a relentless fight and noteworthy energy to come out on top of the meet.

Iowa State obtained a tight lead after the first event on uneven bars.  By the end of the first round, it was a tight race with Iowa State at 48.800, Pittsburgh at 48.275, Air Force at 47.800 and Southeast Missouri 47.700.

The Cyclones showed slight deficiency on the beam as they had an average score of 9.318. Although, that was until Sophomore Haylee Young prevailed for ISU scoring a 9.825 to give Iowa State the spark they needed to finish strong and lead through round two.

“Today was not our best beam performance, but we had a few good routines and stuck landings,” said assistant coach Katie Minasola in a release from the ISU athletic department. “Overall, we need to focus on hitting routines.”

In the floor event, Iowa State’s gymnasts had a powerful exhibitions one after the other. Kelsey Paz tied her career high of 9.825 and Young tied her career high with a huge score of 9.900.

“We had a lot of improvements from last weekend, and I am pleased with how they did,” said assistant coach Kristen Maloney in the release. “I look forward to getting better on the little details.”

In the end, Iowa State came out on top showing high potential for the season ahead of them.

The Cyclones will go back on the road next week to Norman, Okla., for a triangular meet against Oklahoma and Arizona State.
