It took nearly a month and a half, but new-ISU football coach Matt Campbell has rounded out his coaching staff by naming Jon Heacock the new defensive coordinator Tuesday.

Heacock was Campbell’s defensive coordinator at Toledo in the past two seasons.

Heacock was in line to be the interim head coach at Toledo after Campbell departed for Ames, but the Rockets decided to go with former offensive coordinator Jason Candle.

With Campbell gone and Candle and Heacock at the helm, Toledo won its bowl game, 32-17, against No. 24 Temple.

Heackock headed a Toledo defense that allowed 20.8 points per game, which led the Mid-America Conference, and 375.2 yards per game, which ranked fourth.

Heacock was the head coach at Youngstown State from 2001-09 and was an assistant coach under former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel at Youngstown State from 1991-96 and 2000.

Heacock racked up a 60-44 record as the head coach of Youngstown State.

His more recent stops include being a defensive coordinator at Kent State from 2010-2012 and a defensive backs coach at Purdue in 2013.

Campbell’s staff is made up of almost all coaches who played or coached with Campbell at some point. They have been busy as well, signing five players at the mid-year transfer mark and adding on a few other commits since.
