History of the puppy bowl

Katie Wallner

Once Super Bowl season is approaching it reminds me that Puppy Bowl time is approaching too.  The Puppy Bowl is a television program shown once a year on Animal Planet on Super Bowl Sunday. The original idea behind the puppy bowl was to mimic the game of football with puppies with a kitten halftime show. The first Puppy Bowl aired on February 6, 2005. All the puppies that were featured in the first ever Puppy Bowl were from shelters.

We all know how dangerous football can get, but the Puppy Bowl can become just as dangerous. Luckily they have a veterinarian on site during the puppy bowl to administer medical care when needed.

The puppies to get a break every 30 minutes to not only give them a break from all that running around but also from the heat of the lights.

All of the animals that are featured in the Puppy Bowl are adoptable (except for the penguins).

In 2011 numerous cameras were used for filming with about 50 hours of footage. Compared to 2012 with 90 hours of footage. In 2013 they started to place cameras in some of the toys so you can have a “puppy’s-eye view of the action”.

So keep an eye out for the Puppy Bowl this Super Bowl season on February 7.
