Iowa State’s Recreation Services released a letter Friday, saying State Gym will remain closed for the rest of the semester but may reopen by Dec. 28.

State Gym has been closed since Sunday Dec. 6 when a fire started in the sauna in the men’s locker room. Though the fire was put out, smoke filled the gym.

The each surface in the facility must be cleaned, and the building still smells of smoke a week after the fire, according to the letter.

“It is not toxic to breathe in normal circumstances and is safe for Recreation Services staff to be working in State Gym. However, it is important to us that the air quality be satisfactory prior to our patrons working out in the facility,” according to the letter. ‘

Among other maintenance for Recreation Services facilities, the Beyer Hall pool will be closed for emergency maintenance until further notice, according to the letter.

The pool in Forker Building will be open for lap swim Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. during Finals Week. Towels will not be provided as laundry service is not available.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our facility users and appreciate your patience. Like you, we too are anxious for the facility to be reopened,” according to the letter.
