The Cyclones overcame a third period deficit to win their first leg of their series with Dakota College – Bottineau.

The Lumberjacks came out of the gate quickly on a power play goal from Lucas Walsh with 9:15 in the first period. The Cyclones had a chance to score after a Lumberjack boarding penalty, but were turned away on special teams.

That wouldn’t deter the Cyclones, who tied it up at the end of the period on a goal from Adam Alcott, who was assisted by Preston Blanek and Jake Uglem. That was the final chance they had that period, and entered the first intermission tied at 1-1.

The Cyclones continued to fight through penalties throughout the second period, managing to kill off an early boarding call on Jon Severson. They couldn’t keep the Lumberjacks out of the net, following a goal from Frank Flight 11:50 into the second.

The Cyclones opened the third period red hot, with two goals in 47 seconds from Colton Kramer and Blanek to extend the lead to 3-2. The Lumberjacks responded with a shorthanded goal from Lucas Walsh to tie the game at 3-3. The Cyclones would gain the lead again on a game winning goal from Jake Bruhn to go to 4-3.

The Cyclones will finish their series tomorrow at 7:30 at the Ames Ice Arena. This will be their final game of the semester before they’re back in action on January 8, against Minot State.
