ACTORS to present Charley’s Aunt
November 10, 2015
The Ames Community Theater’s ACTORS will perform Charley’s Aunt, a British comedy, from Nov. 12 to 22, marking the first show of their 60th season.
Charley’s Aunt will show at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12-14 and Nov. 20-21. The play will also show at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov.22, at the Ames Community Theater.
Tickets are available on the ACTORS website for $15 dollars.
The story, written by Brandon Thomas, is set in 1892 and follows Charlie Wyckham and his friend, Jack Chesney, as they convince Fancourt Babberly, another student, to pretend to be Wyckham’s aunt in order to chaperone their romantic affairs with Amy and Kitty.
While in disguise as a woman, Babberly (or “Babbs”) becomes the love interest of old Spettigue and Sir Francis Chesney, causing shenanigans and twists of fate.
“Making sure that the cast understands the comedy, so that they deliver the way that the audience could understand the comedy has been [one of] the major challenges,” said Jason Paull, the director of Charley’s Aunt.
However, this play is considered a timeless comedy, since the situation and the relationship between characters are universal in modern society.
“[The goal was to] help [the cast] understand this was the situation socio-politically or socio-economically — this was what happened — and give them a bit of history to go along with their directions as far as acting,” Paull said.
As this is a British play, the cast had to adjust their accents to suit their British roles. According to Paull, ACTORS hired a dialect coach to assist actors with learning a British accent.
