October 30, 2015
The ISU tennis team was red hot to start off day one of the Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational in Daytona, Fla on Friday.
The Cyclones started the day with their usual dominance in doubles. They finished a perfect 3-0 led by another great performance from Samantha Budai and Liza Buss. The Budai/Buss tandem moved to 7-1 for the fall and has now won four straight.
Iowa State was equally successful in singles play. The Cyclones jumped out to a quick 6-0 with wins from Anna Kuuttila, Claudia Toledo, Annabella Bonadonna, Alejandra Galvis, Budai and Buss.
The Cyclones came back to added two more wins in the second round of singles matches. Freshman Regina Espindola and junior Natalie Phippen cruised through their opponents to win 7-6 (4), 6-0, and 6-1, 6-0. Their quest for perfection would end in those final matches, but the team still finished an impressive 11-1 for the day.
Day two begins Saturday at 12 p.m.
