The Illusionists: Live From Broadway is coming to Des Moines this weekend
October 19, 2015
The Illusionists: Live From Broadway will bring a diverse magic show to audiences from Oct. 23 to Oct. 25 at the Des Moines Civic Center.
Tickets are available at the Des Moines Civic Center Ticket Office at 221 Walnut St. in Des Moines, Iowa, and via Ticketmaster. Prices range from $35 to $105.
This group of world-class illusionists will present a variety of magic acts, which The New York Times named “a high-tech magic extravaganza.”
Although the illusionists have performed individually in the past, and each illusionist brings something different to audiences. The show brings together a variety of different styles of magic, including ‘the Anti-conjuror’ Dan Sperry, ‘the Manipulator’ Yu Ho-Jin, ‘the Inventor’ Kevin James, ‘the Escapologist’ Andrew Basso, ‘the Trickster’ Jeff Hobson, ‘the Weapon Master’ Ben Blaque, and ‘the Daredevil’ Jonathan Goodwin.
“Everybody is different,” Sperry said. “There is no overlap. There is nothing that is gonna be similar to the other one. This makes the show strong.”
Sperry uses magic to create a thrilling atmosphere by placing the audience in unfamiliar situations and taking them out of their comfort zone.
“What makes it exciting is that the audiences [are] seeing this stuff for the first time,” said Sperry. “And, for me, it is a motivator to stay on top of things and make sure there is not any accident[s]. If it goes bad, it can go really bad. So you don’t want any accidents there. ”
Sperry calls himself an Anti-Conjuror, a self-made title that represents going against the common trend in magic.
“I think the hardest [challenge] is maybe staying ahead of the game in the sense of technology,” Sperry said.
When it comes to performing, Sperry said the audience often tries to uncover the magician’s secrets, but they are not as savvy as they think.
The Illusionists will perform 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24, and 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Des Moines Civic Center.
