Attendees of the Farm House Museum Independence Day celebration on Saturday will experience a blast from the past along with live music and a variety of activities.

The museum will also celebrate its 155th year as the oldest building on campus. It is an ongoing part of the festivities surrounding the 40th anniversary of Iowa State’s campus museums.

The celebration will be free and open to the public. The museum will be available for touring and lemonade and light snacks will be provided.

The Onion Creek Cloggers and Band will perform old-fashioned American folk music from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The performance will include traditional instruments like banjos and fiddles along with unorthodox instruments like spoons and the sound of footsteps.

The music will be accompanied by a recreation of the traditional American dance “clogging,” and members of the audience will have the opportunity to participate.

The Gilbert Tractor Club will exhibit historic tractors and balers throughout the event.

At 2 p.m., a time capsule from the early days of the museum will be opened. The capsule is thought to have been created about 40 years ago.

The Farm House was the first building constructed on Iowa State’s campus, predating any sort of educational facilities. It is the oldest piece of ISU history.
